Local historian finishes tales of

Ancient Druid visitors in Michigan? Stone circles and Celtic
dolmen
ceremonial stones in the Upper Peninsula? Believe it, and this book
will tell you why. These artifacts and many, many others are the
subjects of Fred Rydholm’s most recent book.
Author, teacher and historian from Marquette, Rydholm is the go-to guy
for information regarding the history of the Upper Peninsula. Michigan
Copper is the culmination of years of study, research and collaboration
with a Harvard professor and world experts across many fields.
Readers will learn about hundreds of artifacts discovered through the
course of European settlement in the U.P. and the rest of the United
States.
These artifacts have long been pooh-poohed by archeologists and
anthropologists, many of whom have staked their careers on the fact that
the first white man to arrive in the new world was Christopher Columbus.
Rydholm’s curiosity was aroused as a young boy on a trip to Isle
Royale. There, he and others saw the thousands of ancient copper mines.
In pursuit of information about these mines, the miners and the
destination of the immense amount of copper removed, he set out on a
journey, the results of which are documented in Michigan Copper.
Rydholm and others who have sought to bring artifacts and information to
light have endured insult and criticism for their research and
questioning. Some have lost their entire careers or worse.
Take the family from Kensington (Minnesota), who in the 1860s found a
large stone on their property inscribed with ancient Norse runes.
Accused of forgery, they were severely ostracized.
Two adult children committed suicide and one family member changed her
name to escape persecution. The stone, now housed in a museum in
Kensington, has been proven to be authentic. The message reads as
follows:
“(We are) 8 Goths (Swedes) and 22 Norwegians on (an) exploration
journey from Vinland round about the west, We had camp by (a lake with)
2 Skerries (islands) one day’s journey north from the stone. We were
(out) and fished one day. After we came home (we) found ten of our men
red with blood and dead. AVM (Ave Virgo Maria) save (us) from evil. (We)
have ten men by the sea to look after our ships 14 days journeys from
this island. (In the) year (of our Lord) 1362.”

Thousands of artifacts found subsequently in the old Mississippi River
bed support the presence of visitors of this type, long ago.
Credentialed archeologists are afraid to support unpopular theories such
as Rydhom’s for fear of committing professional suicide, even with the
help of overwhelming evidence supporting their claims.
Rydholm, a perpetually good-natured individual, doesn’t let the
negative response dull his passion and inquiry for finding the truth.
His wife June is just as passionate and knowledgeable and has traveled
with her husband throughout the world, documenting their travels with
hundreds of photos.
So far, the scientific community has been unable to give satisfactory
answers for the existence of this evidence. From Norse axes and
encampments to Minoan tablets and Ogham inscriptions—the evidence is
mounting against the primacy of the Columbian theory.
Scientists have claimed that ancient Ogham inscriptions are “glacial
erratics” gouged out by glaciers tens of thousands of years ago, or
that found artifacts have been “expelled” as ballast (originally
carried from Europe) from Columbus’ sailing vessels and vessels since.
Another explanation states that the precariously balanced dolmen stones,
(a massive stone placed on top of three triangulated smaller stones), at
least four of which are located around the Lake Superior watershed, were
set down by glaciers. The fact that these dolmens are found throughout
Europe, where their provenance has been traced to human placement, seems
to have completely escaped the experts attention.
Rydholm has set himself the formidable goal of answering such questions
as: “Who really were the earliest visitors?” and “What are the
artifacts that tell their story?” Like a crime scene investigator, he
has cordoned off the entire North American continent searching for clues
of visitors from more than 2,000 years ago . . .
